Thor: Ragnarok delievered a huge blow when Hela destroyed Mjolnir. Luckily, the God of Thunder realized that he doesn’t need a weapon and could focus his power through his body. However in Avengers: Infinity War , we saw that Thor needed a weapon to kill Thanos because in his encounter with Mad Titan defeated Thor easily, so he decided to use a weapon and this way Stormbreaker as being introduced in MCU.
While this model of Stormbreaker was a mix of Ultimate Mjolnir and the Ultimate Marvel Mjolnir’s Form, longtime Marvel Comics already knew hos powerful both weapons are Introduced in comics. But how powrful is the new axe – battle hammer, how does it compare to Mjolnir ?
Is Stormbreaker more powerful than Mjolnir? Its a difficult question to answer, but hints to this question is being spread throught the comics, movies and comments by the creators.
Heading back to the comics, the original Stormbreaker first appeared in Thor#339. The Korbinite known as Beta Ray Bill defeated Thor in a battle to see who was worthy to hold Mjolnir, but the horse face alien chose not to accept the weapon, beacuse of his worthiness shining above all, Odin had Eitru to forge a new weapon, and thus Stormbreaker was born.
Stormbreaker from the comics was made from the materials as Mjolnir — Uru metal — making it visturally indestructible. It was the the same method that Odin used when he had the dwarves create Thunderstrike years later for Eric Masterson.
If it is in fact an exact dulpicate, then there is still reason to believe that one of them is stronger than other, atleast in the comics. But about the world of Marvel Cinematic Universe? As we saw in Thor Ragnarok, Mjolnir was indestructible, but when Thor faced Hela she was able to destroy the hammer easily. So can Stormbreaker be more powerful than Mjolnir?
Avengers: Infinity War screewriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely talked about Stormbreaker last year when the movie hit the theatres. The two of them was comparing it Thanos Infinity Gaunlet, even stating that it would be more powerful, which in the end it proved to be.
Eitri is the one who created Stormbreaker both in the comics as well as in the film universe, who also created the Infinity Gaunlet. According to the screenwriters, Stormbreaker could cut through the power of Infinity Gaunlet but not through the glove, explaining that Eitri may have used magic in writing the rules when creating his weapons.
So, with that in mind, does this magic make it more powerful than Mjolnir? Not necessarily. The enchantments and methods used in its creation seemed similar and identical. In Thor: Ragnarok, the God of Thunder told Korg that it was made from the special metal from the heat of a dying star, which is exactly how Stormbreaker was crafted in Infinity War.
Ryan Meinerding, Marvel Studios head of visual department, said in The Art of Avengers: Infinity War was almost “too powerful”. When going into more detail about the new weapon, he said that it “take some incredibly powerful just to pick it up because it’s unbalanced weapon.
Now, while some observers might automatically assume that makes it more powerful than Mjolnir, that might not be the case. Meinerding’s wording makes it sound like the size and build Stormbreaker makes it harder to handle and control, not necessarily that it is more powerful Mjolnir.
However, something Eitri said does make it sound like it holds a slight advantage. The dwarves crafted Mjolnir, and Eitri is widely cconsidered the most skilled weapon’s maker of all dwarves. Eitri called Stormbreaker the best weapon he ever forged, called it’s a king weapon.
While it is the “best weapon” he ever created, that doesn’t really say whether or not it is stronger than Mjolnir. Stormbreaker was created for a reason, it was mainly being created to battle and kill Thanos and the power of Infinity Gaunlet. It is also an Axe, so it pierces skin and slices through the power of Infinity Gaunlet, and as in Avengers Endgame that Thor used Stormbreaker to cut Thanos arm and then he went for his head, but here the question arises that if Mjolnir could have delivered an equally devastating blow?
That remains the same, as Mjolnir has even done some significant damage to other gods and god – level beings like Surtur for example. Also, lets not forget that Hela had a personal connection with Mjolnir, which may have had something to do with its destruction, which may have not been the case with other beings.
Both weapons can summon Thor’s power of lightning but according to cinematic universe Stormbreaker can summon Bifrost but Mjolnir cannot. Both are devastating weapon that can lead to Thor’s victory over almost everyone. So Stormbreaker might be slightly more powerful than Mjolnir, if Eitri is to be taken at his word, but both are truly worthy as the weapon of a god.
